How Does My Car Air Conditioning Work?

How Does My Car Air Conditioning Work?

It’s a hot summer day. You are stuck in traffic. The sun is beating down and the temperature starts to feel unbearable inside your car. Then, with the turn of a knob, cool air washes over you. Instant relief. Then you start to wonder… what is the magic behind this wonder we call your Car’s AC System.

Here's the basics of how your Vehicle’s Air Conditioning System works:

AC Refrigerant

Your Vehicle AC System uses a specific substance that cools the air that circulates through the system. Many older vehicles used Freon. Newer cars use more environmentally friendly types of Automotive AC Refrigerant, such as R134 or R1234YF. Whatever AC Refrigerant your Automobile requires, we can accommodate!

AC Compressor: The Heart of the AC System

The AC System Compressor does just that: it compresses the refrigerant and circulates it through the system. Your Vehicle’s AC Compressor is the heart of the AC System. If your AC Isn’t Blowing Cold like it used to, we will check the compressor’s performance.

The Condenser: The Cool One

A Car’s AC Condenser is the part that removes heat from the refrigerant and expels it outside the car. If your Car’s Air Conditioning Isn’t as Cold as it should be, we’ll want to check the condenser’s functionality.

The Evaporator: Moisture Eliminator

The Auto AC System Evaporator is what pulls heat and moisture out of the air that circulates into the cabin of the vehicle. The evaporator then releases that condensation out of the car. Often times you’ll notice this after parking and seeing water dripping from under your car. If you notice any wetness on your floormats in the front, that could indicate a clogged AC Evaporator.

AC Belts, AC Hoses: Keeps the Flow

The Air Conditioning Belts and Hoses keep the refrigerant moving through the system. These are inspected during any Vehicle AC Service.

Cabin Air Filter: So you can Breathe Easy

That is exactly what the Cabin Air Filter does. It filters the air that circulates into the cabin of your vehicle. It helps remove contaminants, dust and dirt from the air you and your passengers are breathing in.

Keeping it Cool

Routine Maintenance is key to keeping your Vehicle AC System working at peak performance. Our Certified Auto Mechanics will perform and AC System Service. They will inspect all the AC System Parts and Replace the Cabin Air Filter. Then they will perform a climate control service. That service restores heating & cooling efficiency. It also freshens the interior air. It removes debris, foul odors, mold & bacteria from the air blowing into the car that you’re breathing. Then the system is vacuumed and recharged to your vehicle’s manufacturer’s specifications. Your Vehicle’s manual will clarify if we’ll be using the R134 Refrigerant or the newest type of Refrigerant R1234YF. Either way, we can keep you cool!
